The National Basketball Association (NBA) has a rich and colorful history spanning over seven decades. Throughout its history, the league has been home to some of the most talented athletes and successful teams in all of sports.
The first NBA championship was awarded in 1947 to the Philadelphia Warriors led by Hall of Fame center Joe Fulks. In the early years of the league, there was a relatively small number of teams vying for the championship, but as the league grew, so did the competition.

The Celtics’ dynasty was led by Hall of Famers Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, and John Havlicek, and their success helped to popularize the sport of basketball across the United States.
In the 1980s, the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, became the league’s preeminent team, winning five championships in the span of a decade. The Lakers developed a fierce rivalry with the Celtics, culminating in the 1984 NBA Finals, widely regarded as one of the greatest series in basketball history.
The 1990s saw the emergence of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls as one of basketball’s greatest teams. With Jordan leading the way, the Bulls won six championships in eight years, cementing their place in NBA lore. Jordan’s style of play and competitive drive inspired a generation of basketball players and fans alike.
In the early 2000s, the Los Angeles Lakers returned to prominence, winning three consecutive championships led by future Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. The Lakers’ success marked the end of the Shaq-Kobe era, but Lakers fans were soon rewarded again with two more championships led by Kobe and Pau Gasol.
In recent years, the Golden State Warriors have dominated the NBA, winning three of the last five championships. Led by perennial All-Stars Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant, the Warriors have redefined how basketball is played with their “small ball” approach and emphasis on three-point shooting.
