As summer comes to a close, it’s time to start gearing up for some cozy nights in with your significant other or a solo movie night. With the pandemic still affecting movie theaters, many studios have opted to release new films straight to streaming platforms or release them in limited theatrical runs. This means you have plenty of options to choose from for your next date night or solo viewing.
Romantic comedies are a timeless choice for date nights, and luckily there are plenty of new ones to choose from. “The Kissing Booth 3” is currently streaming on Netflix, which follows high schooler Elle as she navigates her final year and big decisions about her future with her best friend and crush. “He’s All That,” also on Netflix, is a modern take on the classic ’90s rom-com “She’s All That,” with a gender-flipped twist. After being dumped by her boyfriend, influencer Padgett agrees to transform the school’s loner into prom king.
For those who prefer a bit more edge to their date nights, thrillers and horror films provide just enough adrenaline rush to keep things exciting. The highly anticipated “Candyman” is set to release on August 27th, with Jordan Peele producing and co-writing. The film follows an artist who becomes obsessed with the urban legend of Candyman, leading to horrific consequences. “Don’t Breathe 2” is also currently in theaters, a sequel to the 2016 horror hit where a blind veteran is forced to protect his home from a group of thieves.
But for those who aren’t interested in romance or horror, there are plenty of other options for solo or date night viewings. “Free Guy” is a feel-good action-comedy featuring Ryan Reynolds as a video game character who becomes aware of his existence. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” releases on September 3rd, the latest addition to the Marvel cinematic universe starring Simu Liu as the titular hero. And for those looking for something a bit more dramatic, “CODA,” which won four awards at Sundance earlier this year, tells the story of a deaf family with a hearing daughter who dreams of singing.
With so many new releases to choose from, it’s easy to switch up your movie night routine and try something new. Whether you’re settled in for a cozy night with your partner or flying solo on movie night, these new releases provide something for everyone.
